Lawsuit: Tom Cruise Wants $50 MILLION From Tabloids
When it comes to celebrities filing lawsuits against magazines, the defendant usually ends up being “The Enquirer” or some other trashy news-stand tabloid. This time, two larger magazines are finding themselves at the end of a lawsuit from Tom Cruise. It was announced today that Tom Cruise had filed a $50 million USD lawsuit against both Life & Style magazine as well as In Touch magazine.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, claims the headline from Life & Style’s July 30th Cover, stating “Suri Abandoned by her Dad” as well as the Oct 1st In Touch headline “Abandoned by Daddy” are outright false. Tom Cruise states in the lawsuit that he “loves his daughter and would never abandon her.”
The lawsuit is asking for $50 million, plus punitive damages, due to alleged invasions of privacy as well as defamation against Tom Cruise. Both magazines are owned by the same publishing company, and at this point, neither of the two magazines have responded to the lawsuit.
According to Tom Cruises’ lawyers, the lawsuits aren’t about the money, but are rather to teach the tabloid industry that they can’t go around making up false stories that paint celebrities in a negative light. Tom Cruise is fed up with the way he has been treated by the tabloids and how his relationship with his daughter has been exploited for financial gain. According to Tom Cruise, if he wins the lawsuit, the proceeds will go entirely to charity. Tom Cruise hopes that if he wins, the lawsuit will slow down this “malicious” company that makes money from naive Americans by spewing “garbage.”
From our perspective, as a celebrity blog, we would be surprised if this lawsuit went forward. It would be very hard to prove that Tom Cruise has suffered $50 million in damages.
