Juan Carlos Gumucio Marie Colvin Second Ex-Husband
A tragic news was released today American journalist Marie Colvin was killed in Syria, along French photographer Rémi Ochlik. Marie’s personal life in very interesting, one person that came to my mind was Maria Colvin’s second ex-husband Juan Carlos Gumucio who ended his life so tragically. Want to know more??
Marie Colvin was in her mid 50’s when she was killed Homs, Syria when a rocket hit them when she and Remi were escaping from a building. Their death is a big tragedy both were extremely talented in their own areas of expertise, Maria could get to the most dangerous and hard to get locations, where no one thought she could get, she loss her left eye in 2001 when she was wounded by shrapnel in Sri Lanka, it was after that she began using her distinctive eye patch.
Maria had been married twice, first to Patrick Bishop a journalist and author and then to Juan Carlos Gumucio, who is our person of interest today.

Juan Carlos Gumucio was born on November 7th, 1949 in Conchabamba in central Bolivia, his mother Azul Quiroga and his father Rene Gumucio, who left hem when Juan Carlos was three. Juan Carlos Gumucio’a family was wealthy and old established, one of Bolivia’s greatest family, rich for their mining and lands.
JC Gumucio’s mother Azul remarried to a member of the Patino family who like the Gumucio were important and wealthy. During his 20’s Gumucio became involved in a Left-wing student politics, he was forced to leave Bolivia and went to Argentina, then to Washington where his uncle was the Bolivian ambassador, JC quickly became attracted to politics.
In the 80’s he became a junior reporter with the Associated Press in New York, he travelled to Rome, Teheran and Beirut, in 1985 when the AP asked him to leave Beirut because a fellow journalist Terry Anderson had been kidnapped (he was held captive for six years), Gumucio who didn’t like to be told what was best for him from people sitting in America a friend once said, put resignation from the AP and joined the Times he would also collaborated with CBS where he met his dear friend Robert Fisk, then El Pais (Spain). With El Pais he was a correspondent in London, Jerusalem and the Middle East.
Juan Carlos Gumucio got married four times, and had two daughters Monica from his first marriage (who he never met) and Anna his daughter from his third marriage to a Swedish woman. Marie Colvin was Gumucio’s fourth wife. He shot himself in the heart at a farmhouse in Conchabamba on February 25, 2002. He was 52.
